There’s a real appetite for good books about parallel programming, and when they’re free, that’s even better. I wrote previously about the free parallel programming book published by National Academies Press. I now have another one to share with you.
Paul McKenney works at the Linux Technology Centre at IBM and first released his book ‘Is Parallel Programming Hard, And, If So, What Can You Do About It?’ in January this year. He originally planned to finish the book before releasing it, but then changed his mind because he said parallel programming keeps changing and the book would never be finished. He’s been updating it every few months, with the last update published in August. The book is available in English and is now being translated into Chinese.
The book currently runs to over 400 pages, with some empty chapters still to be filled in. It aims to provide “a handbook of widely applicable and heavily used techniques” and tries to relegate techniques that have not yet passed the test of time to an appendix. Quick quiz questions are dotted throughout the text to help you test your learning, and the book makes good use of graphs and source code to illustrate key ideas.
